A Dutch engineer living in the United States, Jacob Weber, is recovering in a Mexico City hospital after being violently robbed in the early hours of July 11 while en route to procure materials for an ongoing project.
According to reports, Weber was traveling by taxi to a supplier when his vehicle was ambushed by a group of seven assailants in the city’s industrial district. The attackers forcibly stopped the car, assaulted both Weber and the driver, and stole several valuable items, including a substantial amount of cash.
Authorities confirmed that the thieves made off with $187,500 earmarked for purchasing critical work materials, as well as Weber’s mobile phone, laptop, bank cards, and international passport.
Weber sustained minor injuries and is reportedly suffering from trauma caused by the incident. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he remains under observation. Tragically, the taxi driver, who has not been named, was shot and critically injured during the robbery and is currently in intensive care.
The Mexico City Police Division has opened a case and launched a full-scale investigation into the incident. “This is a serious crime, and our teams are working diligently to identify and apprehend the perpetrators,” a police spokesperson said in a statement.
Jacob Weber, originally from the Netherlands, has been based in the United States for several years and is involved in engineering projects across North America and Latin America.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the robbery to come forward as efforts to track the suspects continue.
